Amidst the accusations of “we Hearthstone now, boys” there are legitimate critiques to be made of the new Jumpstart digital cards. But in order to reach them, we have to examine each of the three mechanics in turn, and ask ourselves the following questions: Firstly, what does this mechanic contribute to the game of Magic? Secondly, could this mechanic (or a version of it) exist in paper? And thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, is the mechanic in the spirit of the Magic rules?
