Are you just starting out in the commander format? Do you want to build your own deck instead of picking one of the pre-constructed decks offered by wizards of the coast? In that case, you’ll need to choose your commander from a list of over 500 candidates, a list that grows larger with every new set.
What do you look for in a potential commander, especially if you’re a player new to the format?
The most important rule to the Commander format is simple: Pick a commander that interests you, play your favorite cards, have fun.
If there’s a commander out there that excites you, that interests you, that feels perfect for you due to flavor or power or flavorful power, be they one two or even five colors, then don’t hesitate to pick them as your commander and build a deck.
Beyond that, there’s three factors you may also want to consider when making your selection: Color, Casting Cost, Function.
