When it comes to card sleeves for Magic the gathering, pokemon and other standard sized trading card games, players have always had to choose between style and quality.
Illustrated sleeves have often suffered from poor shuffle feel and art that
Sold in packs of 80, this now 5th Generation of Deck Protector sleeves, feature the iconic art of John Avon.
Obviously the art is the biggest selling point here. Jon Avon is one of Magic’s most celebrated artists, and his unhinged lands are considered by most players to be some of the greatest if not the greatest land art ever drawn for the game. Having this iconic artwork on your sleeves is a form of style and self-expression that’s hard to pass up.
But just what is the quality of the sleeves themselves? Let’s take a moment, difficult as it may be, to try and put aside the artwork and just examine the overall quality of the sleeves.
The sleeves are glossy with grey backsides and a clear plastic front. Both the front and back are highly reflective. It’s too bad Ultra Pro didn’t adopt the semi glaze style of their PRO-Team sleeves here.
The sleeves are thankfully easy for double sleeving, and the ultra pro holo logo is transparent instead of bright silver, so the only intrusion on the sleeve is the Magic: The Gathering logo that someone, somewhere felt necessary to deface Mr. Avon’s art with.
Durability is great. Really glad to see more and more Ultra Pro sleeves that don’t split like thin paper napkins. While a few of my stretch tests did get an easy snap, for the most part these are solid sleeves unlikely to split, and yes, I tested each illustration, not that this should bare any relevance.
One noticeable problem is the glossy sleeves have a tendency to stick to one another. The sleeves I am showing on camera now are new, but for my test decks I found that even with heavy play, there was always an issue with the sleeved cards sticking to one another, causing problems when I might go to draw a card and pick up two instead. Reason #5725 matte sleeves are preferable to glossy.
