An Introduction to Gemstone IV: Where Dungeons And Dragons Books Become a MMORPG
Gemstone IV is a game like no other, where traditional RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder become a massively multiplayer online role playing game.
To summarize it briefly, players create a character by choosing between human, elf, dwarf, half-elf, halfling, gnome, half-krovlin, and more and then select a profession from warrior, wizard, sorcerer, rogue, paladin and many more
And then train and level up within a completely interactible multiple user dungeon where you more or less live a fantasy life of your own determination, from spending days hunting orcs in the lower dragonsclaw forest to evenings mixing potions in the wizard’s guild. Or just drinking with friends at the Raging Thrak inn and telling tall tales of your exploits.
And all in an entirely text-based environment.
That’s right, Gemstone IV exist completely in text. The only graphics are those of your mind, which means, in my opinion, it has better ones than any other mmorpg that has ever been or will ever be.
I’ve been playing Gemstone since 1996, and while I know many of you may be confused and bemused by the idea of an entirely text based game, I want to show you not only how to play but also why it might just be one of the most extraordinary gaming experiences of your life. Best of all the game is free to play, so there’s there’s no cost for you to give it a try and role up a character today. What do you want to be? A dwarven Paladin or a half-elven Wizard? Will that wizard train in archery or carry a sword and shield instead, or perhaps a pure mage with staff in hand and lightning bolt on the fingertips. The possibilities are endless, as Gemstone lets you live within the pages of a fantasy book.
