A review of Leifkicker 3D hex tiles for use with Settlers of Catan. Settlers of Catan is one of the most beloved and widely enjoyed games out there. It’s heavily played by casual to advanced tabletop gamer alike. In fact, many of my more hardcore gamer friends have said to me over the years that they love using Catan as a gateway drug of sorts for their casual friends, leading them away from the mediocrity of milton bradley and parker brothers, and into the world of real tabletop board gaming.

Also, there’s something to be said for a game that is challenging, socially engaging, and just all around fun.

Leifkicker Studios, maker of the excellent deck boxes for Magic the gathering, also offers a line of 3D hex terrain tiles for use with Catan. Each unique tile in this set is hand cast polyurethane resin that is hand paint and protected with several clear coats, so unlike cardboard, these tiles are durable enough to ensure many years or even generations of play.

If you already love the game Catan will you really be interested in this handmade set?

Before I continue, I must point out: Although these 3D terrain titles are obviously modeled after catan, you can’t actually play catan without owning the catan board game. The roads, settlements and other components, all the resource and gameplay cards are needed and you can only get these by buying and owning Settlers of catan. These 3d terrain tiles are just a way to create a more fun and flashy experience for your and your family or gaming group.

So what about these pieces? In terms of construction, each piece is heavy and solid feeling, and they thankfully don’t slide around on the table as much as the cardboard does. Also, if you spill your drink on these, you haven’t ruined your game, forcing you to buy a new one at Target and then put the ruined one in the box and return it.

Which is something I just made up right now and didn’t really happen. Come on, I….cough

The Vibrant colors that have been hand painted on to each piece are simply sublime. Also, it took me a moment to realize this, but no two tiles are alike and are each hand cast from a unique original. This means your island of catan is unique across all its hexagonal territory. The amazing immersion this creates is something else entirely.

Each piece has a discreet flat space sculpted into it for the numbered discs game pieces into this set. This is such a great advantage over using random mini or even some other custom catan tile sets as these work with the catan components.

Each piece is also cast of colored resign, meaning if paint scratches off, it is significantly less visible because the tile itself it the color of the resource.

Also, each piece is sculpted to the official hexagonal size, meaning you can integrate these with other settlers of catan sets and set pieces.
